Michael Andretti


Michael Andretti's racing career began at age ten, when he won 50 of 75 go-kart events. He made his professional debut in 1980 at Watkins Glen in a Formula Ford and won the 1981 Northeast Division title with six first-place finishes. In 1982, he won six races for the Super Vee Championship, and he received SCCA Pro Rookie of the Year honors. Andretti first raced in the PPG Cup in 1983, running the last three races of the season after teaming with his father, Mario Andretti, for the first time, in the 24 Hours of LeMans. He then took the Formula Mondial title in 1983, which he followed by making his IndyCar debut at Las Vegas, finishing 19th. The next year, in his first full season, he qualified fourth in his first Indy 500 and finished fifth. Andretti broke through in 1986 by winning at Long Beach for one of three victories that year. One of the moments he treasures most from the years racing against his father was in Portland in 1986, where he lost to Mario by just 0.07 seconds, then the smallest margin of victory in series history.
