Mary Tyler Moore was best known for her work as a bubbly comedian in the television sitcoms “The Dick Van Dyke Show” and “The Mary Tyler Moore Show.” Moore was originally trained as a dancer, and, before she graduated high school, she got her television start on “The Ozzie and Harriet Show” in 1955. In the next few years, she appeared in many of television's most popular dramatic series, including “77 Sunset Strip” in 1958, “Hawaiian Eye” in 1959, “Thriller” in 1960, “The Millionaire” and “Surfside 6” in 1960. Moore's big break came in 1961 when she landed the role of the adorable Laura Petrie on “The Dick Van Dyke Show,” a performance which earned her two Emmy Awards. Then, in 1970, Moore starred in her own television series, “The Mary Tyler Moore Show,” which ran from 1970-1977. As Mary, she won three more Emmy Awards and a special award in 1974 as Series Actress of the Year, as well as the hearts of America. After the show ended, she turned to dramatic roles in television and film roles, including “First, You Cry” in 1978, and her most important dramatic venture in 1980’s “Ordinary People,” for which she was nominated for an Academy Award.
