Apolo Anton Ohno

Apolo Anton Ohno, an Olympic champion in speed skating, was given his unique first name by his father, Yuki, who combined the Greek words "Ap," meaning "steering away from", and "lo," meaning "lookout." Interestingly, his named almost seemed prophetic. At age 13, in 1995, Apolo was a state champion swimmer and national champion and record-holder inline skater when he decided he "wanted to try something new". Speed skating was his choice. Within 7 short years Apolo was a National Champion, World Champion, and an Olympic Champion. His resume includes: 2003 World Cup Overall Champion...Two-time Olympic medalist (gold in 1500m; silver in 1000m)....Member of men's gold medal 5000-meter relay team at 2001 World Short Track Championships...2001 World Cup Overall Champion (also champion in 500m, 1000m, and 1500m)....1999 World Junior Short Track Champion...Youngest American to win a World Cup...
