Avery Johnson


Avery Johnson’s road to basketball glory has been filled with many twists and turns. He was only 5’3” when he graduated high school, so a future career playing basketball was hardly a given. Avery's collegiate career began at New Mexico Junior College, but he ended up back home playing for Southern University from 1986 to 1988. During his two seasons there, Johnson led the NCAA in assists both years, and was named the Southwestern Athletic Conference Player of the Year and Southwestern Athletic Conference Tournament MVP both years. He still holds several Division I records, including most assists in a single game, and highest career assists average. Despite his success at the collegiate level, Johnson went undrafted. He began his professional career as a member of the Palm Beach Stingrays of the United States Basketball League in 1988. In August 1988, Johnson signed with the NBA’s Seattle Supersonics. From 1990 to 1992, he played with San Antonio, Denver, and Houston. For the next nine years, he was a member of the San Antonio Spurs (spending one year during that time with Golden State).
