Grounding himself in home life rather than Hollywood frou-frou and carrying out his dad's custom of working the next generation into the family business, Beau Bridges has enjoyed by far his greatest success on the small screen. A juvenile in films including "Force of Evil" and "The Red Pony,” he contemplated a career in basketball while in college but finally realized his short stature was too big an obstacle for him to overcome in that profession. In the early 1960s, he appeared on several TV shows, including his father's syndicated "Sea Hunt" series, and began landing adult film roles toward the end of the decade, notably a supporting part in "The Incident." Although he proved himself a capable romantic lead early on, particularly in "The Landlord," Bridges would ultimately find his niche as a character actor. He worked steadily, if not spectacularly, through the 70s in features like "Child's Play" and "The Other Side of the Mountain" before landing opposite Sally Field in "Norma Rae." He gave one of his better performances in "Heart Like a Wheel."
