Ben Affleck entered the limelight of Hollywood when he and best friend Matt Damon wrote and starred in “Good Will Hunting,” winning the Best Original Screenplay Oscar for their work. Affleck became interested in acting when his family moved to Boston, and, at the age of eight, he starred in PBS's marine biology-themed “The Voyage of the Mimi.” That same year, he met his best friend, Matt Damon.
After trying his luck at college, Affleck decided his passion resided in the realm of acting and, in 1992, he set out for Hollywood, appearing in small film roles, including “School Ties,” “Dazed and Confused” and “Mallrats.” It was around 1995 when both Affleck and Damon were getting fed up with the lack of substantial work to be found in Hollywood, so they decided to write a screenplay that would feature them as the leads. In 1997, Director Gus Van Sant showed interest in Affleck and Damon’s script, which prompted Miramax to make the film “Good Will Hunting.” Before the film's release, Affleck starred in Kevin Smith's “Chasing Amy,” which received good reviews and showed Affleck to be a viable leading man.
