Acclaimed author Augusten Burroughs had a very unusual childhood – a childhood that America has come to know in his best-selling memoir Running with Scissors that spent more than four years on The New York Times bestseller list, spawned an Oscar nominated film starring Annette Bening, Alec Baldwin and Gwyneth Paltrow, and earned him literary stardom.
Since publishing his first novel, Sellevision – the fictional story of the warped lives of four home shopping network employees – Burroughs has published five other works, among them three memoirs, and two collections of essays. He most recently released the third memoir, A Wolf at the Table: A Memoir of My Father and is at work on a collection of holiday stories entitled You Better Not Cry. The film adaption of Sellevision, is also currently in production.
After surviving his tumultuous childhood and dropping out of high school, Burroughs obtained his GED and became successful in advertising. He was admitted to rehab for alcoholism, and used his writing as motivation not to drink. His time in rehabilitation inspired his second memoir Dry which describes the gritty and, not at all glamorous, details of his treatment.
